History

Democratic efforts by our people in 1989 led not only to radical political changes but also to changes in education. The increased degree of autonomy given to faculties meant an end of central control and uniformity. These changes were reflected in selecting and preparing fields of study at the Universities of the Third age as well.

As a first institution concerned with education of elderly started its program at Comenius University in Bratislava in 1990. The good example was followed by other universities in Slovakia as in the cities Nitra, Martin, Košice, Banska Bystrica, Zvolen, Žilina, Trnava, Trenčín, Liptovský Mikuláš, Prešov and Ružomberok (see the map).

At the founding conference of ASUTV in 1994 Prof. Ivan Hričovský of the Slovak Agricultural University in Nitra was elected as its first president. As an active lecturer at several universities Mr. Hričovský was very productive in disseminating the ideas and aims of UTAs in the whole Slovakia. After an action and very productive work his term of office expired on the 16th of January 2003. Mrs. Nadežda Hrapkova from UTA at Comenius University in Bratislava was subsequently elected as the next president. The original seat of ASUTV was in 2003 transferred from the UTA at Slovak Agricultural University in Nitra to the UTA at Comenius University in Bratislava. On the 28th of November 2014 was elected as a new president of ASUTV Mrs. Lucia Hrebeňárová from University of Žilina.

The pedagogical process at UTA is complemented by other educational and social forms. Along with lectures and seminars, we organise excursions, panel discussions, visits to other universities, informal meetings, visits to theatres, thematically conceptualised trips, mutual vacations and other activities of UTA graduates in their own club.

The association business is conducted in accordance with ASUTV by laws Accepted by the founding by the conference as amended later.
